Here are some projects that our teams are building and you’ll be hearing more about in the coming months:
DistrictBuilder Enhancements – You might think that with the redistricting for the 2010 Census mostly wrapped up, we’d be mothballing the DistrictBuilder project. But redistricting in a basic democratic process for legislatures with geographic representation and is ongoing around the world. With our partners at Public Mapping, we are working on new scoring mechanisms and faster score calculations.
Citizen Science Platform Evaluation – Azavea and its partner, SciStarter, have been awarded a small grant by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to evaluate the technology platforms of citizen science projects and then to identify technology gaps related to data collection projects. We will be releasing two white papers outlining suggestions for improving the tools available to science projects.
Nature Conservancy Coastal Resilience – The Nature Conservancy has an active research and outreach program related to the impacts of climate change and other phenomena on coastal ecosystems. This “Coastal Resilience” program has multiple mapping web sites. Azavea is working with The Nature Conservancy and the University Southern Mississippi developing a new Coastal Resilience mapping application that will integrate nine coastal regions around the world and create an extensible platform for adding new regions.
