New Tree Tenders Chapter to Plant Trees in Spring Arts

New Tree Tenders Chapter to Plant Trees in Spring Arts
PHS and Azavea, the first Tree Tenders business chapter, hold greening event

 WHEN:     WEDNESDAY, MAY 24, 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

WHERE:   990 Spring Garden Street, Philadelphia

WHAT:

The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, in partnership with Arts & Crafts Holdings and Azavea, will lead a planting of three trees in front of the 990 Spring Garden building in the Spring Arts neighborhood. Two English oak trees and one yellowwood tree will be planted and cared for by Azavea, the first PHS Tree Tenders business chapter, which is also the first Tree Tenders chapter formed in the Spring Arts neighborhood.

PHS Tree Tenders are volunteers who are trained in selecting the right tree for urban spaces, tree planting, tree care and ongoing maintenance. Since the program’s inception in 1993, PHS has trained more than 4,500 Tree Tenders in the Greater Philadelphia region. Each year they add thousands of trees to city streets, along waterways, in parks, and in other public spaces. This effort is part of the PHS-led Plant One Million campaign to restore the region’s tree canopy.

Arts & Crafts Holdings, the new Tree Tenders group, and PHS will work closely to identify future tree planting locations in the Spring Arts neighborhood. The group hopes to serve as a model for future business greening groups.
