Summer of Maps Fellow Reveals Which Philly Neighborhoods Are Most Prone to Severe Crashes

Summer of Maps is a summer fellowship program that offers $5,000 to student GIS analysts to perform geospatial analysis pro bono work for non-profits.  Carlos Bonilla (from Temple University), Annaka Scheeres, (from Calvin College) and Parker Ziegler (from Middlebury College) worked on 2 projects each.

Carlos Bonilla compared traffic crashes per square mile with Indicators of Potential Disadvantage (IPD). IPD is a census map tool developed by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission. DVRPC looks at different demographics that may have specific planning-related issues or challenges. His analysis reveals that the 7th district in North Philly has the highest concentration of severe traffic crashes in the city.
