If you are currently an undergraduate or a graduate student and studying GIS or spatial analysis, consider applying for the 2018 season of Summer of Maps. Summer of Maps is a summer fellowship offered by Azavea which helps fellows build their portfolios and skills while completing cutting edge projects for nonprofits. Fellows work full time in Azavea’s Philadelphia office and receive one-on-one mentoring, a $6,000 stipend and additional benefits.

In its 7th year, Summer of Maps has completed 34 projects with nonprofits and graduated 17 fellows from the program. A few highlights from recent years include an analysis of crashes in New York City, modeling poaching activities in protected areas in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Congo, and measuring change and impact of tree canopy in Portland, Oregon.

2018 Fellowship Projects

This year’s hand-selected projects do not disappoint. We have projects from Audobon Alaska, The Committee of Seventy, Thurgood Marshall Institute, and DataArts, just to name a few. In past years, fellows have learned or increased their knowledge in areas such as R and statistical analysis, data visualization, design, data aggregation and cleaning, trend analysis, and remote sensing, among many other skills. Besides doing sophisticated analysis and creating beautiful outputs, fellows also act as the client contact and project manager alongside their mentor. Previous fellows have highlighted this as one of the most valuable aspects of the program and something that is difficult to gain access to in school alone.
